Cloudflare has introduced Wallets, a programmable wallet for artificial intelligence agents. A wallet handle can be requested now, while payments, stored funds, and virtual wallets will arrive at a later stage.
What problem does it address?
Many services require a person to create an account, configure a payment method, and generate credentials before using an API.
Cloudflare wants to give agents a stable identity and a controlled way to purchase digital services. The goal is to reduce interruptions when an agent needs to query an API, use a tool, or access paid content.
Spending limits for each agent
An account will be able to create a separate virtual wallet for each agent. The owner will decide how much it can spend, which providers it may use, and the maximum value allowed for each transaction.
An agent could therefore pay for a specific service without receiving unlimited access to all available funds. These controls are intended to reduce risk, although they cannot completely eliminate errors or unwanted spending.
Payments for APIs and content
Cloudflare plans to let agents use these wallets to pay for API calls, MCP tools, data, digital content, and artificial intelligence processing services.
The company also plans to use stablecoins for the initial settlement of transactions. Wallets is presented as digital payment infrastructure, not as a bank account or investment product.
How x402 fits in
Cloudflare will connect Wallets with x402, a protocol that can attach a payment requirement to a digital request. An agent could therefore pay for an API query or access to a specific tool.
Wallets will serve the buyers of digital resources. Monetization Gateway will allow selected owners to charge for pages, APIs, data, and tools protected by Cloudflare.
What is available now?
For now, Cloudflare allows users to request a Wallet handle. Storing funds, making payments, receiving money, and creating virtual wallets for agents remain features announced for a later stage.
Monetization Gateway also remains on a waitlist. Cloudflare Wallets should therefore not yet be understood as a fully operational payment system for every account, agent, or provider.
